Our eggs are laid by hens which are free to range during the day in fields overlooking the glorious Exe Valley and we believe our hens must have one of the very best views in Britain!
We were one of the first free range farms to recognise the benefits of providing the hens with overhead shade whilst out on the range. As a result we have planted over 5,000 trees for the hens to range under and the feeling of security this gives the hens means they spend much longer outside.
All that exercise and fresh air gives the hens a healthy appetite so meanwhile back in the hen house, food is available at all times. The grain-based diet is supplied by a mill in Crediton and even the hens’ drinking water is ‘local’ having been derived from a borehole on the farm.
Within the hen house we provide comfortable nest boxes where the hens can find the peace and quiet they seek to lay their eggs, whilst the straw-covered floor of the litter area provides them with somewhere to scratch and dustbathe… a popular feature when the Devon weather is doing its worst!
The conditions on our farm are approved by Freedom Food to strict RSPCA welfare standards and we are regularly inspected. We welcome visitors to the farm and particularly enjoy hosting visits from school children so that they can learn more about how their food is produced.
